This weekend, Gyöngyös hosts the first-ever Hungarian event in the UCI Gran Fondo World Series, as the Tour de Mátra welcomes 760 riders from 26 countries for three days of racing in the spectacular Mátra Mountains.
The action starts today with a 19 km individual time trial, a fast and mostly flat out-and-back course through Gyöngyös that offers riders an early opportunity to secure qualification for the 2026 UCI Gran Fondo World Championships in Japan. Fans can follow the race live via the official stream: https://tourdematra.hu/time-trial-2026.
On Sunday, riders face the real challenge of the weekend with the 94 km Medio Fondo and 161 km Gran Fondo. Both routes wind through the Mátra Mountains before finishing atop Kékestető (1,014 m), Hungary’s highest peak. The Medio Fondo features around 1,700 metres of climbing, while the Gran Fondo includes more than 2,500 metres of elevation gain, making it one of the toughest events on the 2026 calendar.
With a growing international field and a spectacular mountain-top finish, the Tour de Mátra is set to write a new chapter in Hungarian cycling as it joins the world’s leading amateur cycling series.
