Record Participation for 2026 UEC Granfondo European Championships in Varese

The 2026 UEC Granfondo European Championships get underway this weekend in Varese with record-breaking participation numbers, confirming the growing appeal of amateur championship racing in Europe. Following the introduction of a qualification-based format linked to the UCI Gran Fondo World Series, the event has reached unprecedented levels with more than 5,227 riders registered across the individual time trial and granfondo competitions.

A total of 500 riders have secured one of the coveted entries for Saturday’s Individual Time Trial, which sold out well in advance. The event represents a significant increase compared to previous editions and is part of an overall participation boom that has seen rider numbers almost double from the previous record of 2,600 participants in 2025.

Saturday’s time trial will take riders over a challenging 22-kilometre out-and-back course featuring 220 metres of elevation gain. Much of the climbing is concentrated in the opening half of the course as competitors make their way towards the turning point in Ganna, the highest point of the route, before a fast return to the finish. Of the 500 registered riders, 370 qualified competitors holding a full annual licence will compete for the coveted European Championship titles in their respective age-group categories.

The championships continue on Sunday with the traditional granfondo events. Categories men 19-59 and women 19-49 have the 126-kilometre Granfondo featuring 2,120 metres of climbing as official European Championships distance while the 101-kilometre Mediofondo with 1,610 metres of elevation gain is the distance for the older cateogies. Starting from 09:00, the various age-group categories will leave at four-minute intervals, ensuring a safe and competitive race environment across the scenic roads around Lake Varese and the surrounding Lombardy region.

A total of 4,726 riders are expected at the start of Sunday’s races, including 1,069 qualified riders holding a full annual licence who will compete for the European Championship jerseys and medals.

The impressive participation figures underline the success of the championship’s new qualification concept. Since riders must first qualify through events of the UCI Gran Fondo World Series, the European Championships now feature a highly competitive field made up of the continent’s strongest amateur cyclists. The requirement for all qualified participants to compete in their national team jerseys has further strengthened the prestige and atmosphere of the event, creating a true championship feeling rarely seen in age-group cycling.  Qualified riders also get a place in a priority box in front per category.
