The first edition of the Tour de Batam based on the very successful Tour de Bintan who was part of the UCI Gran Fondo World Series for many years has seen great races over the weekend.
In the 15km time trial on Friday, Jennifer Choi (USA) won the female categories in an average speed of 36.2km/h, 18 seconds faster than Ponnie Ramirez (IDN) with Alicia Brittain (RSA) as overall third at 30 seconds.
Fastest male in the time trial was Margus Uprus (SWE) who won the overall event at 42.9 km/h, beating two compatriots Matthew Brittain (RSA) and Luke Chambers (RSA) by respectively 23 and 40 seconds.
The next day, the 149km road race from the north to the south of the island and back was a moment of glory for Carl Victor Pettersson (SWE) who got a large 5-minute gap to Matthew Brittain (RSA) with Muhammad Raihan Bin Mohd Airudin (SGP) as third at almost 7 minutes behind the winner who did the full course in an average speed of just over 40km/h.
The women did the same course but turned back faster towards the finish. Sri Suyamti (IDN) had a small gap in the final to win with 9 seconds to Alicia Brittain (RSA) who outsprinted Boram Seo (KOR).
On Sunday a non-qualifying 104km race ended the weekend with Matthew Brittain (RSA) and Ponnie Ramirez (IDN) as overall male and female winners of the GC over three days.
