La Granfondo Guadeloupe is a new event on the UCI calendar, ideal for riders who would like to combine their trip with a vacation on this tropical island in the middle of the winter in the northern hemisphere.

General

Guadeloupe in December offers a perfect escape to the Caribbean, with the dry season bringing ideal weather for exploring.

This French archipelago boasts diverse landscapes: Grande-Terre features stunning white-sand beaches perfect for relaxing and watersports, while Basse-Terre is a nature lover’s paradise with lush rainforests, the La Soufrière volcano, and spectacular waterfalls like Carbet Falls. Don’t miss diving in the Cousteau Marine Reserve.

Island hopping to Les Saintes, Petite Terre, or Marie-Galante provides more beautiful scenery and marine adventures. December also brings a vibrant festive spirit, with traditional Chanté Nwèl carols and delicious local Christmas cuisine. Warm temperatures (around 26-27°C) and inviting sea make it a prime winter destination.

Granfondo

Starting from the city of Capesterre-Belle-1eau on the Basse-Terre wing of the island, the road follows the coastline towards the capital city of Pointe-à-Pitre for the first 40km to make a tour through the city before entering the major climb of the day.

That climbs brings riders from sea level towards a maximum altitude of 620m above the sea.  A climb in two steps over 13.5km at 4.3% average with a first 5.5km uphill followed by a short 1,5km downhill before entering the hardest part of the climb as the last 4km towards the top is more than 8.5% average.

The race then follows the western part of the island and has a smaller 5km climb at 3% average with its top 10km before the finish line!

Total elevation is a challenging 2883m as the coastline always goes up and down with beautiful vistas.

Cyclo Découverte

Not a qualifier event, but an option on Saturday for those who love to attend : Cyclo Découverte remains on the flatter part of the island and lets you discover the Grande Terre wing with start and finish in Saint Francois
