Cyprus Granfondo comes back with Gran Fondo stage race after two years of covid cancellations

The first European event on the UCI Gran Fondo World Series calendar takes place this weekend in Cyprus for a three days stage race with a time trial on Friday and two Gran Fondo road races over the weekend.

The event has been part of the UCI calendar for several years but had unfortunately to be cancelled last year and in 2020 because of Covid. Also this year, the event is suffering from the war in Ukraine as it usually attracts a lot of Russian and Ukrainian participants.

170 riders have signed up for the individual time trial on Friday. The 20km course starts with a first uphill 2km before heading down along the coast line for a back and forth loop with start and finish in Kouklia.

The queens’ stage comes on Saturday with a 97km uphill course with neutralized start at the Pafos castle to finish again in Kouklia for a total elevation of 1500m. The highest point on Saturday is just below 1000m above sea level.

On Sunday, riders have again a neutralized start for a shorter final stage of 54km, but the finish is now on top of the mountain for a total elevation of 1440m.

A total of 300 riders have signed up for both road races.
