Gran Fondo Svenborg will be organized for the first time on the island of Funen as home qualifier for the UCI Gran Fondo World Championships later in august in Aalborg. The weekend consists of a time trial and granfondo.
TIME TRIAL
The 23.2km time trial on Saturday is an out-and-back loop starting in the city center for a course which mainly goes along the sea for the first half. Riders turn away from the sea after 10km to go to a turning point (km 12) at an elevation of 43m to come back over the same road towards the finish. Apart from the turning point, the course is flat and has a total elevation of 193m.
GRANFONDO
On Sunday, the main event will have two distances. A long 157km Granfondo as qualifier distance for all men 19-59 and women 19-49 while a shorter 77km mediofondo is the qualifier distance for all men over 60 and women over 50.
The first 29km of both courses are the same with a granfondo going left and further up north while the mediofondo turns right to reconnect again with the granfondo course for the last 29km.
With a total elevation of respectively 1143m and 448m, the Danish countryside proves to be more than flat with a road always slightly going up and down, very similar to what riders can expect at the UCI Gran Fondo World Championships later in Aalborg.
In the Granfondo, three climbs are marked with a label coming after 31, 42 and 49km so earlier on the course. The climbs have an average gradient of 4% over a distance varying from 1.2 to 1.8km. Enough to break the peloton into smaller parts as the roads wind through the landscape and it’s difficult to stay in front.
