Youngsters rule in Granfondo Isle of Man

The Granfondo Isle of Man saw junior riders with impressive performances during the weekend.

The 9km uphill time trial on the famous Snaefell climb on Saturday tested the legs for the first time with Tyler Hannay in the U19 category winning in a time of 20m57 ahead of Corrin Leeming (M19-34) and Seb Tremlett. The average speed of the winner was 25.77 km/h (15.8 mph).

Naomi de Pennington won her F40-44 age group to take the fastest female time of the day in an average speed of just under 20 km/h (12.2 mph) on the steep uphill. Fiona Cockburn (F50-54) and Carrie Wernhem (F19-34) both won their respective age groups to take overall second and third.

The 137km closed Granfondo on Sunday on the famous TT courses saw Hannay winning again after a solo break to finish in 3h48, more than 3 minutes ahead of another junior rider Zac Walker and Corrin Leeming. Naomi de Pennington was again the fastest lady of the day in 4h34. Sally Walker and Fiona Cockburn of the F50-54 category completed the overall female podium.

Both juniors aren’t eligible to qualify for the UCI Gran Fondo World Championships where qualification only starts from the age of 19 onwards.
