Varese tested Worlds courses in between the beautiful Italian lakes

The second edition of the Tre Valli Varesine, the Granfondo between the Italian lakes has proved to be a great candidate to run Worlds next year end of August and early September.

The 22km time trial had the start next to the Varese Hippodrome for a loop on major roads with some climbing in the first part and some slight downhills in the second part, but the course remains for real time trial specialist with a big engine and power.

Fastest overall was French former World Champion Gregory Cassini in the youngest age group in a time of 29.09 for an average speed of 45km/h beating Italian Stefano Nicoletti, another former World Champion in the discipline with 8 seconds while Marco Ferrari finished in third.

Laura Simenc (Slovenia) was the fastest female in 33.13 for an average speed just under 40km/h beating Jeannie Longo (France) by 12 seconds and another Slovenian Danijela Svetik.

The Granfondo on Sunday had a 130km course while the Mediofondo as qualifying distance for men over 60 and women over 50 had a 103km course.

Fastest female in the Granfondo was Federico Pozzetto beating his compatriot Paolo Castelnovo in the sprint with 2 while Nikita Eskov completed the male podium.

World Champion Simona Parente was the fastest female in the Granfondo beating German silver medal winner Astrid Schartmuller and French Silvia Perrenoud by more than 5 minutes.

The fastest male in the Mediofondo qualifying categories was French Jacques Lucas before German Ulrich Rottler and Fulvio Magnaldi, all from the Men 60-64 age group.

Fastest female in the Mediofondo qualifying categories was Olga Cappiello before Maria Cristina Prati and Marinella Sciuccati. A total of 300 riders signed up for the time trial and 2750 for the Granfondo and Mediofondo from which 500 foreigners.
