Brisbane offered cycling on a unique location

Over the weekend of the 13th and 14th of April, Brisbane and Queensland hosted the inaugural Tour de Brisbane riding and racing events for the UCI World Series Gran Fondo and National Road Series for Australia.

For a first time event, over 3000 riders participated with thousands watching and viewing the cyclists spread along the 110km closed road course. Feedback from cyclists competing for world selection has been extremely positive, whilst the free community ride with so many families and kids was certainly one of the highlights for organisers.

Riders comments are ‘the inner City course was a standout success, offering both a technical and challenging terrain much to the surprise of many riders. This combined with the early climb on Mt Coot-tha split age groups. The tunnels have been tagged as ‘surreal’ and a big surprise at their speed and undulation’.

The overall fastest time in the UCI age categories was for Ben Pegard in the M35-39 age group, finishing in 2h48 in an average speed of 39.1km/h. Ben Mason who won the M40-44 category got the second best overall time while Gilbert Quevauvilliers in the same category got overall third.

The fastest female time overall was for Michaela Murray (F19-34) who outsprinted Katie Banerjee (F45-49) and Madeline Lambooy (F19-34) in an average speed of 34 km/h.

Tour de Brisbane wants to add a time trial as part of the festival weekend in 2020.
