7000 riders to hit the roads in Brisbane

The city of Brisbane has successfully hosted a second Australian qualifier event in the UCI Gran Fondo World Series this weekend with more than 4000 riders in the UCI Gran Fondo World Series categories and a few thousand extra in the other recreational categories.

The race in downtown Brisbane was flat and fast with Mount Coot-tha, a steep 2km climb with the top only 16km before the finish as ultimate judgement point.

Riders left with a five minute interval between the different age groups with finally Nicky Rolls scoring the fastest female time in her F50-54 age group. She beated a lot of her younger opponents by several minutes with Simone Longden (F19-34) as overall second and Meredith Hill (F35-39) as third. The average speed of the winner was 35.6 km/h.

The overall fastest male age group of the day was the M40-44 startgroup with John Carr outsprinting 4 others to win in an average speed of 38.46 km/h. Werner Van Der Merwe and Michele Muscillo completed the podium for the three overall fastest times of the day.

The planned time trial didn’t take place due to Covid-19, but all riders who qualified in the top 25% of their age group in the Granfondo will also qualify for the UCI Gran Fondo World Championships time trial in Bosnia and Herzegovina in October!
