1000 riders to attend Granfondo Isle of Man

Good weather, local topstars Mark Cavendish (Quickstep - Alpha Vinyl), Chris Lawless (Total Energies) and Ben Swift (Ineos) at the start and a splendid course were the ingredients for the successful 7th edition of the Granfondo Isle of Man.

The time trial on Saturday morning up the famous TT motorcycle climb leaving from Ramsey had local Corrin Leeming (M19-34) winning in a time of 21m45 for the 2.88miles with an average gradient of 7%. Belgian Thomas Dhooge (M19-34) got overall second in 22m10 while Philip Williams finished in third spot to win his 35-39 age group in 22m17.

Dutch Caressa Van den Boogert (F19-34) won the female time trial in 30m06, 33 seconds ahead of Emily Looker with Tori Loze as overall third. The road races on Sunday had three distances from which the 80 miles Granfondo was the qualifier distance for all riders keen on doing the World Championships. A large group of 20 riders quickly got away from the peloton. From that group Chris Lawless (Total Energies) got away on top of the first climb. Youngster Tyler Hannay bridged the gap but couldn’t beat Lawless in the sprint at the end of the race. The three worldtour riders were not ranked with their UCI points so Hannay was the overall winner of the UCI categories. Belgian Thomas Dhooge got overall third at 3.5 minutes. Mark Cavendish and Ben Swift made it a good training finishing 8th and 9th overall.

First female was again Dutch Caressa Van den Boogert who renewed her time trial win as she was the only female rider capable of staying in the second large group. Emily Looker (F19-34) finished second at 23 minutes and Jo Bridson (F50-54) scored a remarkable overall third spot winning her age group.
