Maraton Franja decided in bunch sprints

The 44th edition of one of the oldest and biggest cycling marathons in the world in Ljubljana this weekend was decided in big group sprints at the end of the 156km course.

In the men’s categories, a group of 21 fought for the win in a tight sprint with Italian Igor Zanetti winning ahead of his compatriot Federico Pozzetto with Slovenian Matic Groselj as third.  The average speed of this group was 43.55 km/h.

Also the female race was decided in a sprint of 3 Slovenian riders and Bulgarian Gergana Stoyanova who finished as fourth.  Lina Cepak outsprinted her compatriots Petra Pasar and Vesna Alegro Baznik for a full Slovenian podium.

The excitement already began on Friday with an individual time trial. Slovenian Timotej Bavec won the 21.2km race in the UCI age group categories in an average speed of 51.26 km/h, beating Austrian Martin Geretschnig and Hungarian Laszlo Zaray by respectively by 24 seconds and 42 seconds.

The female time trial in the age groups was for Slovenian Lara Rajteric in an average speed of 43.80 km/h.  Austrian Katharina Machner and Polish Martyna Wisniewska got second and third overall at 47 seconds and 1m25.
