Granfondo Coimbra Region closed the 2022 qualifier season in style

The 2022 UCI Gran Fondo World Series calendar had its final event this past weekend in Portugal leading up to the World Championships in 6 weeks. A first season after covid with 24 events.

In the time trial on Saturday along the Rio Mondego river, Spanish Fernandez Martinez (M55-59) beated a lot of his younger competitors by winning the overall time trial in a time of 26m49 and an average speed of 45,14 kmh. His compatriot Manuel Sanroman got second while Portuguese Alberto Amaral got overall third at respectively 20 and 28 seconds behind the winner.

Italian Maria Prati (F55-59) was the fastest female in the time trial in a time of 31m09 and an average speed of 38,85 kmh. She also beated a lot of the younger riders with Portuguese Patricia Rosa and Liliana Verissimo in second and third at respectively 54 seconds and 1m49.

The granfondo on Sunday started from Montemor-o-Velho but the course was designed to the east compared to last year.

Portuguese Gil Santos was the overall winner outsprinting Spanish Agustin Gago and Portuguese Igor Alves and 15 others in the steep uphill climb to the castle at the end of the 147km race.

The female race over the same course had a complete Portuguese podium with Julia Legkova winning before Sofia Gomes and Marlene Goncalves.

The shorter mediofondo that counted as qualifier for the women over 40 and men over 65 had Maria Prati taking her second victory of the weekend in the female categories while Jorge Alemao won the male race.
