Cheaha Challenge Granfondo for your ticket to worlds

This weekend, Jacksonville, Alabama, plays host to the Cheaha Challenge Granfondo, a distinctive opportunity for cyclists in the United States and Canada to secure a coveted spot at the UCI Gran Fondo World Championships. As the sole North American qualifier event, it draws riders eager to represent their nation on the global stage.

The qualifying weekend kicks off on Saturday with a 12-mile time trial. Starting in the neighboring town of Piedmont, the course offers a straightforward, largely flat route, allowing riders to test their individual speed and pacing.

Sunday brings the demanding Granfondo event, a 100-mile course that takes riders to the summit of Alabama’s highest peak, Mount Cheaha, standing at 2407 feet. This climb must be conquered twice, contributing to a significant total elevation gain of 9714 feet (approximately 3000 meters) before the race concludes back at the Jacksonville State University Campus.

Organizers anticipate a strong turnout, with around 1000 riders expected to take part including day registrations. Participants come from 6 different countries and 36 US states, highlighting the significance and appeal of this World Championship qualifying event.
