Matic Grošelj and Vesna Alegro Baznik win 45th Maraton Franja after thrilling sprint finishes

The 45th edition of the iconic Maraton Franja BTC City once again delivered spectacular racing on the Slovenian roads around Ljubljana, with both the men’s and women’s events decided in sprint finishes after a selective day shaped on the legendary Kladje climb.

Grošelj wins after decisive Kladje move

The men’s race unfolded from early on, but it was on the Kladje climb, traditionally the key selection point at around halfway, where the decisive move was made.

German rider Alexander Steffens crested the climb first after a strong acceleration, opening a gap of around 45 seconds over the chasers. A select group of six riders came together over the top and committed fully on the run back towards Ljubljana.

In the final sprint, home rider Matic Grošelj proved fastest, edging out Artur Sowiński (POL) in a tight dash to the line.

Behind them, the sprint for third 8 seconds later saw another Polish rider, Jan Miazga, take the final podium place ahead of Alexander Steffens (GER), who had earlier animated the race on Kladje. Slovenians Marko Emeršič and Miran Kovačič rounded out the front group..

Alegro Baznik strongest in all-Slovenian duel

The women’s race produced an equally exciting finale, with a two-up sprint deciding victory.

Slovenian rider Vesna Alegro Baznik proved to bethe strongest after a tight battle with compatriot Pia Bedene Kralj, outsprinting her in the final metres to secure a popular home victory.

Poland’s Sonia Ciecel completed the podium in third place, finishing 4 minutes and 9 seconds down after riding a strong and consistent race behind the leading duo. The full top five was completed by Lieselotte Van Nuffelen (BEL) and Caterina Mercanti (ITA).
