Pekan Classic shines in UCI Gran Fondo World Series debut

The first edition of the Pekan Classics in Malaysia was an instant success as riders from 18 different countries had signed up for either the 162km granfondo or the 93km mediofondo.

In the granfondo, it was a group of 6 finally battling in the final for the win with Aiman Rosli from Malaysia winning in a sprint ahead of Zawawi Azman and Muhammad Faiz Fakhri Omar.  All three Malaysian riders competed in the men 19-34 category.  The average speed of the lead group was 44.8 km/h.

Nur Deena Safia Nor Effandy was the first female, only one and a half minute behind the first male in the race.  Her nearest opponent Dagreat Izzura Izzura finished 44 seconds behind Nur with Anissa Jaffar finishing as overall third and winning her women 40-44 category.

The mediofondo was also dominated by younger riders, but in the categories of men over 60 and women over 50 battling for the qualification for the World Championships, the victories were for respectively Robin Kang from Singapore and Anna Bielinska from Poland.
