The great weather over the weekend saw a lot of enthusiast cyclists travelling to Austrian’s Burgenland for the race weekend in Mörbisch am See.
Fast speed around Neusiedler lake
In the 125km flat and fast granfondo around the Neusiedlersee with passage through Hungary, we saw a group of 50 splitting up from the peloton before entering Hungary, but it was only at 35km from the finish when the wind turned that three riders broke away. Former UCI Gran Fondo World Champion Johnny Hoogerland (NED) got into a break with two teammates from Juraj’ Sagan’s team Marek Canecky and Daniel Vysocan.
The leading trio waited too long got caught back a few kilometers before the finish. With 1,000 meters to go, Adam Foltan from Team Pierre Baguette put everything on one card and brought a clear lead to the finish. “I had great legs today and my team controlled the race well. It was my first start here and of course I’m happy about the win,” said 22-year-old Slovakian Foltan, who finished with a time of 2:51.23 minutes set a new course record. He was 13 seconds faster than last year! Big favorite Johnny Hoogerland had bad luck in the last kilometer and unfortunately fell. Swiss Matthias Studer defeated Belgian Gianni Quintelier in the sprint for second place.
In the women’s category, Austrian Daniela Traxl-Pintarelli celebrated victory with a time of 3:14.22 hours. She won about a minute ahead of the Croatian Majda Horvatand German Mira Fischer.
Time trial competitions with a record number of participants
On Saturday, the individual time trial was held covering 26 kilometers with 200m of elevation. 400 riders signed up. The men’s race was won by Hungarian Daniel Szalay, seven seconds ahead of Jeppe Tolboll (DEN) and Sascha Dittfurth (GER). In the women’s categories, the full podium was Austrian with Anna Kofler winning ahead of Cili Kraut and Magdalena Bernhard.
