From 26-30 August 2026, the UCI Gran Fondo World Championships will break new ground as the event heads to Asia for the very first time, with Niseko, on Japan’s northern island of Hokkaido, hosting the world’s best amateur cyclists. Known for its pristine landscapes, volcanic mountain ranges, and open roads framed by forests and farmland, Niseko offers an unforgettable backdrop for this historic edition of the championships.
Thursday – Individual Time Trial (15 km, Kyowa)
The Championships begin with a 15 km completely flat time trial in Kyowa. Riders will face a back‑and‑forth out‑and‑back course designed for pure speed. With no elevation and wide, smooth roads, specialists can expect a fast, aerodynamic race where every second counts.

Friday – Team Relay (1.9 km circuit, Kutchan)
Friday brings high intensity and national pride with the Team Relay held in the centre of Kutchan. 4 riders of the same nationality can battle for the rainbow jerseys.
3 laps of 1.9km per loop rewards explosive power and flawless teamwork, offering spectators a close‑up, action‑packed race—perfect for creating atmosphere in the heart of the community.

Sunday – Mediofondo (80 km) & Granfondo (140 km)
On Sunday, the World Championships culminate with two road races:
- 80 km Mediofondo (1672m of elevation) – For Men over 60 and Women over 50, featuring classic Hokkaido rolling terrain and long, steady climbs.
- 140 km Granfondo (2370m of elevation) – For the younger age groups, offering a more demanding challenge across Hokkaido’s rugged topography, wide‑open vistas, and natural beauty.
The Granfondo route begins with a relatively flat opening half before hitting the day’s main challenge early in the second half: a 21 km climb rising from sea level to 837 m, averaging 3.7% with gradients up to 9%. After the summit — still 50 km from the finish — riders face another 5 km climb at 5.3% with 15 km remaining. The final kilometres kick up once more, with the last 2 km climbing steadily and a decisive final 400 m at 6%, easing slightly toward the finish line. The Mediofondo uses the same second half of the Granfondo course.
