MEDELLIN
Medellín is Colombia’s second-largest city, set in the Aburrá Valley in the Andes Mountains at an elevation of around 1,500 metres (4,900 feet). Thanks to its lower altitude compared to Bogotá, the city enjoys a warm and pleasant climate year-round, earning it the nickname “City of Eternal Spring”. Once known for its turbulent past, Medellín has transformed into one of Latin America’s most innovative urban centres, recognised for its modern infrastructure, efficient public transport system, and strong focus on social development. The city blends contemporary architecture with green spaces and hillside neighbourhoods, creating a dynamic and welcoming atmosphere.
Medellín offers a diverse range of attractions:
- Comuna 13: Once one of the city’s most dangerous areas, this neighbourhood is now a symbol of transformation. Visitors can explore its colourful streets filled with striking murals, outdoor escalators, and a vibrant local culture.
- Plaza Botero: Located in the city centre, this square features large sculptures by Fernando Botero, Medellín’s most famous artist. The nearby Museum of Antioquia offers a deeper look into his work and Colombian art.
- Metrocable and Metro System: Medellín’s innovative public transport network includes cable cars that connect hillside communities with the city below. The rides offer spectacular views over the valley.
- Parque Arví: A vast ecological nature reserve just outside the city, accessible via cable car. It’s ideal for hiking, cycling, and escaping into nature.
- Jardín Botánico (Botanical Garden): A peaceful green space in the heart of the city, featuring tropical plants, walking paths, and the iconic Orquideorama structure.
- Day Trips: Popular excursions from Medellín include visiting the colourful town of Guatapé, known for its vibrant painted houses, and climbing the nearby El Peñol rock for panoramic views over lakes and islands.
