1600 riders from 27 different countries battle in first The Millars Gran Fondo in Villarreal

The inaugural edition of the new Spanish UCI Gran Fondo in Villareal near Valencia is an instant success as 1600 riders have registered to battle on the challenging 178km course.  Amongst the participants former pro rider and Giro d’Italia winner Ivan Basso.

With start and finish in Villarreal, the course quickly heads towards the mountains, passing through the Parc Natural Serra d’Espada for a first part mainly going uphill with a long 16km climb.  The summit, situated 893m above sea level, is reached at the 72km mark.  The second half is easier going back to sea level.  Total elevation is a challenging 2937m.

Additionally, a shorter 122km route is available, though it lacks traffic security and therefore does not qualify as a qualifier distance.
